Anderson Anderson Architecture is a respected, award-winning design firm with experience in a broad range of project types. Partners Mark Anderson and Peter Anderson started the firm as a design-build construction company in 1984. With a strong foundation in the practicalities of construction, Anderson Anderson Architecture has since grown into a diversely experienced, design-oriented architectural firm collaborating with other architecture and engineering firms, general contractors, manufacturers and construction professionals to provide clients with specialized expertise in construction systems, design excellence, high-quality execution, and experienced representation of the client’s interests throughout the construction process. Close association with diverse teams of experienced design, engineering, and construction collaborators provides a depth and range of expertise that has allowed Anderson Anderson Architecture to accomplish many complex projects of varying scales with a high degree of economy, creativity and recognized excellence in both design and finished construction. Maintaining a relatively small in-house design staff assures close personal attention to the firm’s design projects. Mark and Peter Anderson work together as the lead designers directing each of the firm’s projects, working closely with our clients and collaborators.

Anderson Anderson has built extensively in California and the Pacific Northwest, and has also completed numerous projects in other parts of the United States, Japan, and Europe. Best known for original, finely crafted modern buildings personally developed for individual sites and clients, Anderson Anderson also has developed substantial experience in affordable, fast-track, modular and prefabricated building systems. Working directly with clients, manufacturers and government agencies in the United States and Japan, Anderson Anderson has designed and built numerous buildings and modular prefabrication systems creatively exploiting new construction technologies and project delivery systems focused on high-quality, affordable and sustainable building methods.

Anderson Anderson’s work has been widely published in the U.S., Asia and Europe, and recognized with numerous awards for its creativity in merging design excellence with cost-effective, high-quality execution and green technology. The firm’s work has been featured in numerous lectures and exhibitions, and in publications such as Architecture, Architectural Record, Plan, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Builder, Journal of Light Construction, and in numerous books and international publications. Anderson Anderson projects have appeared in television specials on PBS, CNN, ABC, NHK Tokyo and many other networks. Design honors have included international Progressive Architecture and Spark Awards, and honors from groups such as the American Institute of Architects, The American Wood Council, and The Zumtobel Awards for design in service of the environment and humanity. Two books about the firm’s work in architecture, construction and prefabricated building systems have been published by Princeton Architectural Press in New York—Anderson Anderson, Architecture and Construction, in 2001, and Prefab Prototypes, Site-Specific Design for Off-Site Fabrication, in 2007.

This media-intensive 16,000 square foot exhibition space was delivered in BIM-based, fast track, design-build, IPD collaboration. The galleries and conference facilities are defined by a cloud-like field of undulating fabric boxes serving as projection screens, space dividers, acoustical dampeners, and support enclosure for dense arrays of mechanical and electronic equipment.

This energy-positive portable classroom optimizes educational experience while demonstrating sustainable design. The modular classroom conserves, collects and generates natural resources, including electrical and wind energy, daylight and rainwater. As well as being efficient, natural forces and resources are highlighted and exposed, with systems performance monitored and web broadcast.

Chameleon HouseChameleon House

This house is a tower rising above the rolling topography of its cherry orchard site, peering outwards toward spectacular westward views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding agricultural landscape. The site is minimally disturbed, other than the mounding of two earthen enclosures adjacent to the tower, created from the excavated earth of the foundation and offering a ground to contrast the tower experience above the treescape. Due to the slope of the site, the family enters at the third level, descending down to the kids’ bedrooms and bath or moving up to the main living spaces which look out over the orchards to Lake Michigan.

The house is built in conformity with the strict rectilinear geometry of the tree grid while equally exploiting the secondary diagonal surprises particular to human motion through an agricultural field. The site was intensely studied for the individual particularities of each unique tree within the orchard field, in turn lending the house design this same character of individual conditions within a predominantly regularized system. True to the character of the orchard, the house is laid out as long sequences of interior and exterior courtyards as defined by the adjacent trees, affording long, metered views along the rectilinear and diagonal axes of the field. The massive concrete walls align with the rows of tree trunks, while the open volumes of the rooms and exterior courts align with the open space between trees, resulting in a direct spatial continuity between house and landscape, figure and void.
